During the UNENE Research and Development Workshop in Toronto from December 8 to 10, Dr. Lekhnath Ghimire, a postdoctoral researcher supervised by Dr. Edward Waller in the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering at Ontario Tech University, presented a poster analyzing the renewed global momentum in nuclear energy, often referred to as a new nuclear renaissance, and the potential role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in facilitating this transition.

The research examined the primary factors contributing to the resurgence of nuclear power, such as climate and net-zero commitments, the demand for reliable low-carbon baseload electricity, energy security, and technological advancements in nuclear energy. The study emphasized the advantages of SMRs, including modular construction, lower initial capital investment, improved passive safety systems, flexible siting, and accelerated deployment compared to conventional large-scale reactors.

The study further addressed the role of SMRs in complementing renewable energy sources, enhancing grid stability, and enabling applications beyond electricity generation, such as providing industrial heat, supporting hydrogen production, and supplying power to remote or off-grid communities.

Additionally, the research highlighted Canada’s leadership in SMR development, robust academic and industry collaboration, and national strategies that position nuclear energy as a central component of a reliable, low-emission energy system.

In summary, the research demonstrates the potential of SMRs to address persistent challenges in nuclear deployment and to play a strategic role in advancing global decarbonization and fostering a sustainable nuclear renaissance.
